SALEM, VA--Pitcher Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) capped a perfect day for the Bloomsburg University softball team by tossing a five-inning no-hitter in a 14-0 win over West Virginia State Saturday at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.
Reed, a freshman, fanned eight, did not allow a walk and faced the minimum 15 batters in picking up the win. The only runner to reach base for West Virginia State came in the first inning on an error and was later caught stealing. The no-hitter was the 47th in school history for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg got all the runs it would need in the first inning when the Huskies scored seven times. Lisa Bohner (Northumberland/Shikellamy) had a three-run homer and Missy Bachert (Coplay/Parkland) hit a two-run double in the inning. In the third inning, the Huskies also got two-run homers from Jen Miller (Muir/Williams Valley) and Kelly Zarski (Paxinos/Danville) to help put the game out of reach.
In the first game of the day, Bloomsburg's Reed went 2-3 with a homer and a triple and scored two runs, while Bohner was 2-4 with a double to lead the Huskies a 5-1 win over Shepherd University. The Huskies scored single runs in each of the first four innings and added their fifth run in the top of the seventh. In addition, Alyson Taylor (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) also hit a solo homer for the Huskies. Ashley Lynn (Riverside/Danville) went the distance pitching striking out seven and walking two.
In game two of the day, the Huskies beat Northwood 6-4. After seeing Northwood go in front 4-0 in the top of the second inning, the Huskies tied the game with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The big hit in the inning was a two-run homer from Reed. Bloomsburg scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Zarski and Bohner getting RBI hits for the Huskies.
Lynn picked up the victory with five and a third innings of relief.
The Huskies, 14-6, continue play at the West Virginia Wesleyan tournament on Sunday with games against Ashland and West Liberty.
